Rowan the Strange is a novel based on a character called Rowan. Rowan is living in the Second World War in blitzed London.
The reason that they call him strange is because he has a mental problem. He gets fits over small things and, without knowing what he is doing, hurts people. This becomes apparent when Rowan in one of his fits rams the piano lid down on his sister's fingers, breaking them. His parents then come to the very brave decision of taking him to a mental hospital, or, as they were called back then, lunatic asylums.
This book is based on real things that happened at that time in these asylums following Rowan's struggle through it with all the challenges he faces.
I feel this book is an interesting and truthful book. It really depicts what happened back then and tells you an up close and personal account of what happened at those asylums back in the time of the war.
