Black Rabbit Summer is the story of what happens to an old group of friends, when a good night out at the fair, turns into the worst one of their lives. Alcohol, drugs, and the disappearance of Raymond and teenaged superstar, Stella Ross, turned that night into a nightmare.
I thought that this was a great book. It had just the right balance between the things that we like reading about at our age, and a very good story line. The character descriptions were very clear, so we felt more able to interact with the characters. The settings were also infallibly described, with the fairground being the best of all.
We had a great sense of how the sticky summer heat, crowd and alcohol were affecting Pete, the protagonist. There was a really good build up to the climax, with all the different storylines coming together. It was at this point that we saw who the characters really were, as Brooks made really made us feel the inner tensions between the characters.
It was a great read, as I could hardly put the book down, but I did think that Brooks left too many ends untied. Personally, I think he should write a sequel.
