The Knife of Never Letting Go

Reviewed by Agatha Hazelgrove

The Knife of Never Letting Go, written by Patrick Ness, is a very exhilarating read, about a boy name Todd Hewitt, who lives in the new world where everyone can hear each others thoughts; Ness refers to this as ‘noise’. A sudden change in the book means that Todd Hewitt has to leave the town of Prenticetown. He goes on the run just months away from his birthday, which is when he becomes a man. Accompanying Todd Hewitt is his dog Manchee, and a girl he meets on the way called Viola. Together they face the dangers that lie ahead.

I thought that The Knife of Never Letting Go, was an excellent read, and has the right amount of excitement and sadness, to keep the reader interested in what was going to happen to Todd Hewitt. However it took me awhile to get used to the ‘noise’, as it is a very unique idea, which can get quiet confusing, when Ness writes lots of noise all at the same time. I also like the way Ness reveals the secrets to you slowly, as there is very little explanation at the beginning about why Todd Hewitt suddenly has to leave. This makes you as the reader  want to ask questions, in the same way as Todd Hewitt wants to. I think the concept of this book is good and very different to other books, of this age group, because of the storyline and the reasons behind why Todd Hewitt has to leave Prenticetown.

I think the moving parts that happen, help make the story  more realistic and helps you connect with Todd Hewitt, because of the emotion that are described, and it makes you feel for Todd  which makes him come to life more. I think The Knife of Never Letting Go, is a book that anyone can read and enjoy, because of the way it’s written, for it isn’t just for boys or girls.
