“Shall I tell you about the year I discovered love?"
What I Was is written by Meg Rosoff. This same author won the Carnegie
award last year with Just in Case. It is an intelligently-told story of a
16 year-old boy called Hilary, who is sent to boarding school in Suffolk which
is his fourth school, having been expelled from three others, and meets Finn
there. Finn is about the same age and lives in a fisherman’s cottage and strong
friendship forms between them. As time goes on their friendship grows.
I didn’t enjoy reading this book; it takes a while to get into and frankly is boring. Also some sections of the book are quite slow, even though it has a surprising twist at the end. But the book gives always too much of the plot which makes the surprises less surprising.
Overall I don’t think this book is my kind of book and I wouldn’t recommend it.
When I was reading it, it was a fight to not fall asleep. This book is more boring than you having to read the review of it.
I would give this book a rating of 5/10.
