What I Was

Reviewed by Sarah Mayger

What I Was is a story of a teenage boy who finds a little hut by the sea, and in finding that hut he finds his first love.

“It was love, but I didn’t know that yet”

I really enjoyed this book; it has a good, descriptive story line with an unexpected twist at the end. The author doesn’t give many clues about what the ending is so it comes as quite a surprise, but is really clever at the same time because when you think about it, it really makes sense. This book really made me think about how different life was only fifty years ago and how other people lived. Normally I would only read in school but this book was so good I read a lot at home too.

Stuck in his third boarding school, while on a run a boy stops at a small hut and instantly befriends another boy. But this boy is unusual. He doesn’t talk much and always seems distant with emotions that he doesn’t show. He is strong and athletic but there is something feminine about him too. The two boys have loads of adventures and it’s really good to read about. The writer shows how the character feels really effectively and the book is easy to understand, without being boring.

Although in some bits of the book it seems like nothing much is going on it never gets boring. Overall I think that this story was really good and I would recommend it to most people.
