Finding Violet Park

Reviewed by Emily Mitchell

“She was old. She was dead. She was in a box on a shelf.”

“But I met her, by accident, in the middle of the night. And she changed everything.”

Lucas Swain is a normal fifteen year-old living in Camden. His mother finds it hard to bring up him, his sister and brother. After a long night out, in the earliest hours of the day, he meets Violet Park on a shelf in a taxi office. A surprising twist: She is the ashes in an urn.

I was rather taken aback by the odd subject of this book, as you wouldn’t normally think urns are particularly interesting. As I read on, I became more and more hooked by the tale, and I kept reading on just to see what was on the next page. It was wittily written; although I did find Lucas’s habit of making lists a tiny bit annoying, other than that I think it was an easy and great read.

The ending has a good twist; although afterwards you did see how people could say ‘So what?’.

Overall I would give this book 8/10.
