Lucas finds Violet Park in a cab office and is drawn to her, finding out about her life helps him to understand aspects of his own.
“There were reasons why Violet Park should have meant nothing to me…but I met her by accident in the middle of the night, and she changed everything.”
Lucas Swain is a little bit odd and when he finds himself in a cab office in the middle of the night he sparks a new friendship with an old lady called Violet Park, the only problem is, she’s dead. He makes it his challenge to get her out of there to somewhere where she will be happy and feels like he can sense her emotions. He digs deep into her past and realises a chance encounter with a dead old lady links to the disappearance of his father in a way that will help him and his family move on.
To begin with I didn’t enjoy this storyline very much because the beginning is quite strange, a boy finding an urn in a cab office and desperately wanting to take it home is an original idea but a little bit weird but as the story unfolded and the mystery of Lucas’ missing dad was revealed bit by bit, the story became very interesting and I began to change my mind about it. The characters in the story are well described and interesting to read about and you get an insight to their lives as well as the main characters which I think is really good. The way it’s written is an unusual style because it really shows feelings and it’s really easy to understand but really intriguing at the same time. It makes you really think about the situations and it is really funny in places but there are other areas where you feel the sadness and emotions of the characters.
Overall it’s a really good book that I would recommend for both boys and girls because it’s different to your normal read and I think anyone over the age of eleven would enjoy it.
I give this book eight out of ten.
