Finding Violet Park

Reviewed by Megan van der Loo

'I met her by accident in the middle of the night, and she changed everything.'

Lucas is a fifteen year old boy who lives in Camden and in this novel, who is drawn to an urn which has been on a shelf in a cab office for years: this urn was Violet. It is quite peculiar because he thinks this urn he is drawn to is now trying to communicate with him and change his life for the better. In this book there is a real connection between Violet and Lucas: you can just feel it as you read line by line.

As the plot develops little coincidences start leading him to a member of his family who disappeared several years before. This mystery person was his father. Violet Park helps him discover who his father really is, for better or worse: but this led Lucas into some tough moments. As Violet’s past is revealed it also starts revealing Lucas’s.

This book is quite an emotional roller-coaster because there are all different emotions such as anger, sadness, happiness, humour and love. To me the book just got better as it went along and I couldn’t put it down.

Violet Park for me deserves to be on the shortlist because it’s not your average book: it starts off really bizarre and just unfolds into a great book. I think to me so far it is one of the best.

I would rate this book 9/10 because although the start is a bit weird the ending makes up for it.
