I have found this book one of the
toughest reads of my life. It is as slow as a snail and makes you want to fall
asleep after every chapter.
At the beginning of this book it is extremely hard to understand due to the number of characters added in straightaway. I thought that the author could have easily added the characters more steadily and at a slower pace. I also think that there is far too much description over little things when there should be more on other things. Little happens during the first ninety pages and during this time you think something might happen: but does it? No! I thought there was a glimpse of hope but I was wrong.
After a while I started to enjoy this book and get into it. With Gwyna being taken in by Myrddin and looked after, things started to unravel. He needs her to do a task which in his opinion will help him to tell a good story. At points of this it seems as if he is torturing her and at others he is completely in love with her. This can be confusing as Myrddin's emotions change so often. The plot is well put together and never leaves you thinking something has been changed or is leading away from the plot.
The main section of the book is a rather dull and unimaginative in my opinion but what revolves around it is very well put together and this could be why I found it so slow at the start as it was setting the picture for the exciting bit to occur. It really gets going at the point where Arthur starts to want to rule the land. To get this far in the book you will have to persevere. Gwyna soon has to work and looks after Bedwin, another soldier injured in Arthur's war band, but this isn’t as straightforward as it seems when she realises his own employer is having an affair with him. Gwyna now realises how hard a decision she has to make: if you want to know this you’ll have to read the book.
I’d rate this book 6/10 and for readers of 12+
Good luck reading!
