My Swordhand is Singing

Reviewed by Liz Cottrell

My Swordhand is Singing is the story of a young woodcutter, Peter, who becomes caught up in the danger of the past.

Peter and his father have been running away for years, having never had a permanent place to call home, Peter is relieved at last settle down in the unwelcoming village of Chust.

Peter’s father, Tomas, is delighted with his quiet woodcutter's life, but when his past comes back to haunt him things start to go wrong. Peter begins to worry; why is he forbidden to touch that mysterious box; why did his father dig a moat around their small hut; and what is the meaning of the The Miorita, a song no-one seems to understand? A noticeable change comes over Tomas when more and more murders take place; and when gypsies seem to know something about Tomas’s past Peter doesn’t know, he turns to the bottle.

Can Peter with the help of a gypsy princess help uncover the secret link between Tomas, The Miorita and the nosferatu ...?

This book had an exciting beginning but didn’t grab me till a quarter of the way though. The book did keep pace and excitement all the way though and I really enjoyed the chilling but remarkable tale. I really believe this book could win.
