Reviewed by Beatrice Vincent

Go home Ruben… let the dead bury the dead…

When Ruben’s sister, Rachel, is brutally raped and murdered, he and his elder brother Cole simply have to bring her back …

Ruben knows that Rachel is dead before anyone else, but safe at home, he can’t do anything about it. This is because Ruben has a rare gift that enables him to enter the hearts and heads of people he is close to. When the police say that Rachel’s body cannot be buried until they have found her killer, Ruben and Cole to go down to Devon to plead for their sister’s body back. Unfortunately, Cole has a fighting nature and Ruben is powerless to stop him as he gets into deeper and deeper trouble; this was no longer just a fight for their sister, but a fight for their lives.

I found this book riveting all the way through: although many of my friends said it was slow and boring at the start, I didn’t find it boring at all! I’ll admit there wasn’t much action at the beginning, but this doesn’t mean it wasn’t gripping. I really loved the sinister darkness of this book and the mystery of the dead man was fascinating. I thought that it was with a beautiful ease that the author brought all the different mysteries together in a captivating climax.

All in all I think this was a stunningly executed thriller: worthy of being on the shortlist!
