The Road of the Dead

Reviewed by Dominic Norman

This book starts straight in to the action where Rachel Ford is found to have been murdered after visiting her friend Abbie Gorman and her husband Vince. After Rachel’s brothers have found out about her unfortunate death they have to travel to Lychcombe to find her killer and bring her body back to their mother so that she can be buried at home. During the book Ruben (the youngest brother) finds out a lot about his Gypsy dad who is in jail for manslaughter and also about Cole (his elder brother) and why he felt how he did about Gypsies and his father.

The end of the book turns from trying to find their sister’s killer to finding themselves beaten and bruised and trying to escape from death themselves from Henry Quentin and his gang. I will let you read the book and find out the rest yourself.

This is a fantastic book to read and you really can’t put it down for more than ten minutes without being drawn back to it waiting to see what will happen next. I can see why this book was short listed for the CILIP Carnegie award and I think it has a very good chance of winning the award.

I hope you have as much fun reading it as I did and I also hope that it will inspire you to read the other books short listed for this award.
