The Road of Bones

Reviewed by Beatrice Vincent

Road of Bones is the story of a boy called Yuri, on the run from the officials, along a sinister road of bones …

Yuri lives in a time when saying the slightest thing wrong can get you years of hard labour, and Yuri falls into that trap. After evading capture for some time, Yuri is eventually found, and begins his journey along the never-ending road of bones…

I must say I’ve never really liked Anne Fine books, and this book hasn’t improved my opinion of her writing. The plot-line was good but it didn’t excite me in a way the others did. The story was well told but there was little to no description and it was very emotionless. Usually when I read books I can really identify with the characters but I found it almost impossible with this book. I really didn’t care what happened to Yuri, my heart never raced when he was in danger, and I even didn’t care when other characters died!

I know that Anne Fine has won the Carnegie Medal twice before and I really hope that she doesn’t win again, especially not with this book. Overall, I was very disappointed with this book and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
