The Road of Bones

Reviewed by Rory More O'Ferrall

Written in the style of a war novel, The Road of Bones is an interesting book but does not have the pace and suspense of others I have read. The situation of the Russian Revolution is described well and the ideas the writer has are believable, but there is not enough excitement to make it a quality page-turning read.

In an attempt to make the Revolution more successful, Yuri’s class is dismissed from school and sent to work in a cement yard. Yuri's best friend is killed in an accident while working. He finds himself criticising the safety standards in the work area (which doesn’t go down well as you can imagine) and it is only a matter of time before he has to run away to escape arrest.

The story was written well but just as I thought I was getting into it after a slow start I realised that the plot was fading again. My advice to Anne Fine is simply this: kids like books with lots of action.

Although I have criticised the story line, some of the descriptions were magnificent and some of the characters were well described. Overall I would give this book 6/10.
