Beast

Reviewed by Will Emery

Stephen is not just your everyday foster kid.

“At age twelve I set fire to a skip in a playground that later spread to classrooms, at age ten I broke into his headmaster’s car and fixed the ignition with superglue and planning murder at the age of 17.”

Stephen has no ordinary life though.  He has to cope with his boring social worker Mindy and suffer his foster-sister’s tantrums.  But the most different thing is that he keeps a twelve-foot-long beast in a cage by the local reservoir.  So when he is caught cutting up a pig in his foster home’s back garden people begin to get suspicious, especially his foster-sister.  So Stephen, a friendly blacksmith, and his foster-sister have to find some way of stopping the beast escaping and catching it before it devours the whole reservoir.

From the first line you cannot put down this book.  Each of the 247 pages makes you want to read more of this fantastic book.  It balances thrilling adventure with a small amount of comedy and bit of teenage attitude to make a perfect recipe for any teenage book.  I am very grateful to have been given the chance to read this book and all of its surprises.  I would give it nine out of ten and say that you have to read this book before you die!
