Turbulence

Reviewed by Dorian Wainwright

Turbulence is a book written in the first person by an older teenage girl called Clare or Clay. She lives with her mum, her dad, her gran, her younger brother Jamze and her younger sister Rosie. She does a paper round and enjoys watching Westerns with Dad, and Zombie films with Gran. She goes to college and has a thoroughly ordinary life.

That is until a new couple; the Harkers, move not to far away and Mum invites them to dinner. Instantly Clay knows something is strange about Sandor Harker, and gradually she and her entire family are thrown into a complicated mess of lies, gossip, accusations and ‘crossed wires’, which leaves her, her family and the reader utterly confused.

The plot is a bit confusing. With everything going on, and no-one quite sure who knows what, they have to be quite careful what they say. This leaves you with two choices: (1) Stop and work it all out, which takes longer and leaves you with a slight headache, or (2) Just keep reading and hope it sorts itself out for you. I did the second and it worked!

It is well written, with a very strong plot, but this ‘family affair’ thing isn’t my type of book, so it gets a 6/10.
