Turbulence
is a whirlwind of relationships and friendships. When a partially normal
family gets mixed up with a seriously not-normal couple, things start to go
haywire. It can be fun to have a dominator of everything but sometimes they just
need to get their priorities right. With a little sister who can never be found,
a Gran who is zombie-obsessed and a brother who has no idea of the word
'conversation', her family is not totally normal. The new couple have a great
effect on the family and their behaviour. Midnight fights, stalking and loud,
violent parties create more than a little turbulence. This particular day
began with an insanely-early paper-round, a derelict western movie with her
almost derelict father and a new couple turning up for dinner – this is when
Clay’s life spirals out of control. Ali and Sandor Harker are turbulence on
their own: but mix them with Clay’s family – life is rapidly far from ordinary.
Questions are continually running through Clay’s mind: is mum having an affair,
what have the Iversons got to do with anything? But that was not the only
mystery lurking in Clay’s brain.
Jan Mark cleverly intertwines a mixture of every emotion. I think the main characteristics of this book would be: witty, mysterious, cleverly-written yet realistic with some touching father-daughter moments thrown in too.
My initial reaction when I saw the cover to this book was ‘I think I’m going to be too old to enjoy this’ but as I got into it I was remembered the old saying ‘Never judge a book by its cover,’ and for once this was the case.
