The White Darkness

Reviewed by Jagvir Singh

The White Darkness is an excellent book because it has great characters and it is very descriptive; it puts pictures in your mind.

It’s a short family expedition which makes Sym ask the question she has long been avoiding; is it madness to stake your own happiness on something that isn't there?

The way in which it is written is great and the characters are fantastic. It shows you very clearly how Sym feels and thinks. Sym's 'imaginary friend', Titus Oates, adds an unexpected dimension, especially at the end when it seems possible he's not as imaginary as you think. Clever, sinister, funny and at times truly terrifying, I found this novel really impressive. I would give it a 9/10.

It also has a fantastic use of similes and metaphors which is why I rated it for 13 year-olds and over.  However, at times it can be a very slow read, which sometimes results in readers losing interest in the book and not finishing it.
