Clay

Reviewed by Sheldon Morgan-Dickson

Clay is set in the 1960s in Newcastle. The book is written with a narrator called Clay, giving the sense that the book is written with David Almond as the narrator as a child. Clay is a story about Davie, Georgie and the new boy in town, Stephan Rose. Stephan’s past is a mystery but is slowly revealed throughout the book. Stephan does not go to school but makes clay models which he says can come to life after seeing an angel. The two boys are stunned when he makes a clay baby move. The two boys are unaware that they are entering a dangerous situation. I think Clay is a fantastic book that manages to make the reader question the existence of God. 7/10
