The Scarecrow and his Servant

Reviewed by Vincent Martin

“I have a proposition to make. Here you are, an honest willing youth, and here am I a Scarecrow of enterprise and talent. What would you say if I offered you the position of my personal servant?”

This was quite an amusing book with lots of little quirks and funny moments. Although the book was (probably) meant for younger readers, with pictures, simple text and an easy plot it was still quite hard to put down. I didn’t expect a book such as this to have come from Philip Pullman, although he has managed to make it funny to read. For example there is one chapter where the Scarecrow’s brain falls out and a blackbird nips off with it.

Philip Pullman has also done quite well with the human emotions added to the characters in the story. These conclude to some amusing arguments later on in the book. Overall the novel was an enjoyable read.
