Millions

Reviewed by Hugo Appleby

The book I have just finished reading is Millions by Frank Cottrell Boyce (250 pages). This book is written through the eyes of the main character Damian Cunningham, a intelligent 10 year-old boy who, after the loss of his mother, has recently moved into a new house and a new school. It is based on the decisions thrust upon him after a very fortunate event.

My first impressions of the book were that the cover looked slightly plain and boring, but I thought that the title Millions sounded interesting and so was keen to start reading it.

I was slightly disappointed with the start of the book as it took a long time to get interesting and seemed to bore me with various remarks on saints which seemed totally irrelevant. But as I got past the hundred-page mark it started picking up. It suddenly turned from a dull boring book to an exciting adventure.

‘As I watched, a little scrap of darkness seemed to get free of the big darkness and come rolling through the air towards me. It crashed into the front end of hermitage, smashing the boxes flat and letting even more cold air in. It squatted on the flattened cardboard like a big leathery toad.’

Up until near the end I was really enjoying the book, even after the slow start, but then everything went downhill. After a good middle the book seemed just to collapse into nothing at the end.

So overall I would rate this book about 7/10; it isn’t really my type of book and I think people who want more action should perhaps avoid this.
