Anne Cassidy's novel is adapted from the events involving James Bulger and his two child-killers, but instead it features Alice Tully, a teenage girl on her way to university, determined to put her violent and disturbing past behind her.
This book focuses on human emotions and psychology as it faces an interesting topic: can people change? Alice is reinstated with a new name, new address and new friends in a brave attempt to begin her life again. Though it becomes clear, however hard she tries, it is impossible to escape her past, and even the most insignificant thing can tear it apart.
Anne Cassidy’s view on this scenario is extremely well written, with an interesting uses of parts that will become clear when you read the book. It shows, even after many years, how vulnerable Alice is.It is very hard to fault this book, but although I shouldn’t really recommend an age, I do think it is for the more mature reader and if you are looking for a light hearted read; this is the wrong book for you.
All in all, this is a very well written book, and I would be interested to see whether Anne Cassidy’s other novels are just as compelling.
