Heartbeat

Reviewed by Catherine Radford

My first impression of the book was that the cover looked very colourful and well presented. It also looked as if it was created for a younger person rather someone of my age. Even though you shouldn’t just look at the cover I think that this does help and makes a book stand out.

When I turned the first page I realized it was written in poem form. I was surprised at this. I read on and started to find this book rather boring, and nothing stuck out for it to be page-turning. I felt that I could have easily put it down. It was easy to understand but did not give a very good plot as all the stories were little and gritty and this was wrecking the book. The plot itself was not very intriguing and when I read the back cover it had already told the story before even reading the book.

The basic story of the book including Annie is that she has a passion for running with her buddy Max. She also likes to draw and does not like it when another baby comes into her life and a grandpa appears somewhere in this. The author could make a few small changes to this book and would easily make it that much better.

I would not have put this book on to the shortlist as I feel that it doesn’t even have potential. I am a very slow reader but this book still only took me about one hour to read. I know I may be sounding very harsh but I'm only expressing my opinion.
