Al Capone Does My Shirts

Reviewed by Tom Randall

Gennifer Choldenko's book features an interesting location, Alcatraz prison in its working years, and the family of Moose Flanagan, the son of a prison guard.

It is set in 1935, though I personally would not have labelled the date as I feel it leaves it to the imagination of the reader.  This however, would be limited, as Alcatraz was only working for a small number of years.  It describes Moose’s efforts to fit in at school while being a resident of a world famous prison and how he copes with his older sister, Natalie, who suffers with autism.

This is an interesting book, considering the situation, though I do not like the end and I feel the author rushed it with a cheesy conclusion, spoiling the mood of the story.
