Al Capone Does My Shirts

Reviewed by George Kallias

Moose Flanagan is the son of a prison guard, in Alcatraz! A terrible place, keeping some of the world's most famous criminals, yet it shows, in Gennifer Choldenko’s beautiful writing, that it’s indeed a place where great ideas can be thought.

It’s set in the year of 1935, but the text gives hints of that period in time being the encasing of the story. The novel follows the life of Moose as he moves into his new home, the troubles that he gets involved in because of his autistic sister; Natalie, too, proves a good stem for a story.

The book’s cover is average if you ask me, it does though agree with its title, and is reasonably colourful which would catch people’s eye.

Family troubles are what makes this book what it is: it is a similar scenario to that of real life which is why I loved this book!

A real page-turner if you ask me. Don’t be put off by the slow start, you’ll be sucked in by the click of the fingers. 9.7 out of ten!
