Private Peaceful (Michael Morpurgo)

Reviewed by James May

Private Peaceful is a novel from Michael Morpurgo, an experienced writer with many good titles to his name. Tomo grows up in a small village, which is owned by the evil Colonel. He has two brothers, the cheeky chappie Charlie and the big lad with a big heart, Big Joe. Tomo is inflicted with guilt at a young age, knowing the cause of his father’s death was more than just an accident!

Despite Tomo’s burning guilt he starts school and soon he, his brother and a girl called Molly start more than just a friendship!

War breaks out and Tomo’s brother is forced to join the army: Tomo lies about his age to ‘look after’ him. This book is excellent and keeps you on the edge of your seat despite the fact you may become close to tears.
