The Garbage King is about two boys who live extremely different lives but are both running away from them: one to escape slavery and the other to escape their father’s anger.
One thing that stuck me about this book is that bad things seem to happen right from the start. This gets you right into the book very quickly and you really want to find out what it ends up like.
The style is written going back and forth between the points of view of the two main characters but sometimes switches to other characters. This is not a terribly original idea and might get confusing when the author gets the names of Dani and Mamo mixed up. Apart from that I think that it is a very interesting read that shows life as street kids very well.
I really enjoyed this and think that it would appeal to a wide range of readers. It also fits the criteria for good books in the Carnegie award; the characters are developed, the events happen logically and the style is appropriate.
