The Fire Eaters (David Almond)

Reviewed by Arron Ford

I thought that The Fire Eaters was one of the worst books I have ever read: this was because it was boring and nothing seemed to happen for the first two hundred pages. All that seemed to happen was that Bobby (the main character) went to school and Alisa (his best friend) wouldn’t go to school. It did not seem to have a plot and it didn’t seem to go anywhere at all: for instance Bobby starts off by meeting a fire eater, then he goes to school, gets expelled and that’s about it. The main characters were really boring and they did not seem to have much of a life (eg playing on the beach and playing in the woods most of the time).

There were a few goods points in the book, for example the description was quite good and the start was pretty good as well, but other than that there wasn’t much going for it. If I were to give it a mark out of 10 I would give it a 4!
